Three system types
- Grid-tied: cheapest, offsets your daytime bill, but shuts down during an outage unless it has backup capability.
- Hybrid: the popular choice — solar plus a battery and a hybrid inverter, so you keep the lights on when the grid drops.
- Off-grid: full independence, larger battery bank, higher cost — best for properties without reliable grid access.
Sizing the system
Two numbers matter: panel array size (kWp) for how much you generate, and battery capacity (kWh) for how much you store. Start from your consumption — check your bill for monthly kWh — and the loads you must keep running through an outage. Oversizing wastes money; undersizing leaves you in the dark.

Don't skimp on DC protection
Solar DC is unforgiving — it doesn't have a natural zero-crossing, so faults don't self-extinguish the way AC does. A compliant array needs proper PV DC isolators, DC-rated circuit breakers and DC surge arrestors rated for the string voltage (often up to 1000–1500 V DC). Registration and compliance
Grid-tied and hybrid systems that can feed back generally need to be registered as Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) with your municipality, installed by a registered person, and signed off with a CoC. Requirements vary by municipality — factor the paperwork into your timeline.
Costs and payback
A modest hybrid backup system starts around R25,000 and a whole-home setup can run past R150,000+ depending on battery size. With tariffs climbing, payback periods keep shrinking — and the value of simply having power during an outage is hard to put a number on.
